    UK Swing 2020 Concern

You'd be surprised... but I think the venues will actually be paying to host (ether with money or simply with provision of accommodation and catering). I'm pretty sure the European Tour will not be paying the venues for the use of their property. On the subject of social distancing... I...

    UK Swing 2020 Concern

I'm not really sure what your concern is here. Just that the optics of a load of golfers playing at 5 star hotel venues isn't great? Sorry but that is completely the wrong attitude to have. These resorts are businesses like any other, who mobilise the economy be employing hundreds of people...

    New Course Opens

Ha... my pay to play ratio was probably about £10 a game last year. Might be a bit higher this year right enough.

    New Course Opens

Ultimately I see the 'residents rate' as a bit of an admission that they won't have much income outside of tourist season. Could also be a bit of a marketing strategy... i.e. get some locals playing it so we get some decent reviews and comments on trip adviser etc. Appreciate that it's a...

    New Course Opens

Of course. But sadly perception is more important that reality. Don't let the fact you can get a membership somewhere for £600 and put together a decent set of second hand clubs for a few hundred quid stand in the way of the sensationalism angle... People see the headlines as £235 a round and...

    New Course Opens

Completely agree. I guess the residents rate is not bad to get a round at a top course, and it does look great from what I've seen, but much like my reluctance to spend £450 on a Driver or £800 on irons, I would rather not 'encourage' these pricing structures to become the norm. Kingbarns is...

    Low Spinning Premium Balls

I think 2,800 is maybe slightly higher than ideal, but I don't think it's the kind of numbers that would derail a decent set up. Swing speed key here obviously. My feeling is that most of the 'premium' balls will all have similar results for you. Try the Vice Golf ball questionnaire fitter...

    Par 5s, Start and Finish

Same for me last year. Didn't leave them in the car, but play a mid, or even a short iron for 2nd shot on the par 5s. Longer par 4s have a bit more room to miss, so often worth taking them on, but par 5s are tighter at the green.

    Par 5s, Start and Finish

That's a good point about pace of play. I guess another reason why par 3s are generally not ideal in the opening few holes. My feeling is that Par 5s cause problems for a lot of golfers as people will always play their longest club as a second shot - often a fairway wood or 3 hybrid - even if...

    Par 5s, Start and Finish

There's certainly a perception that golf courses should start with one or two shorter par 4s that give people a chance to 'get into the round'. Historically, courses finished with 'tougher' holes, generally longer par 4s - my feeling is this was due to matchplay being the prevalent form of...

    Current Regulations and New Members

I don't think that there's all that much that can be done. If clubs are using BRS, then easy enough for singles to join groups with other singles or 2s or 3s. I'd imagine the vast majority of golfers would be absolutely fine with this.

    Double Plateau Golf Club

Nice work Jim. Might be an idea to see if you can get Jones Bags on side as well.

TRUMP, What the hell is going on

Ah - fair enough. But the point still stands that there will always be nuances with things that people say, that will be very difficult to police.

TRUMP, What the hell is going on

Absolutely, they have to be even handed. But when you start trying to decide what is and what isn't ok, it becomes an impossible task as there will always be things close to the line and grey areas. There will also be tweets that clearly breach the rules, but have such little reach that twitter...

TRUMP, What the hell is going on

I personally don't see the point in Twitter doing this, and I appreciate they aren't aiming at Trump in particular and other political leaders and news organisations would face similar treatment. It's just that he is the poster boy. But from a Trump point of view, he is just going to play the...

    Golf 2.0

They play 6 holes again, to make handicap rounds up to 18. Obviously restricts numbers on 1st tee on medal days.

    Golf 2.0

I accept that clubs could change their courses if they wanted, but the rules dictate that competitions / handicap rounds must be measured over 9 or 18 holes. So if a club changed to 14 holes, for example, their handicap rounds would only take place on 9 consecutive holes out of that 14. Or...

    Golf 2.0

Also on the subject of 14 holes... I wouldn't say you should have 14, 12 etc. but I think the rules should be more flexible to allow for competitions to be played over different numbers of holes, other than 9 or 18. 18 is too long for a lot of occasions, while 9 isn't sufficient for most...

    Golf 2.0

I think all of these ideas are worthwhile and would improve things. Problem is that the vast majority of courses in the UK have been around for 100 years or so and no one is going to want to make significant alterations to change to loops or 6, or even 9 holes, if this isn't possible in the...

    Positive Scoring Method

It's not for me. I can see the benefit of playing without consequences when learning the game, but at some point you are going to have to accept the reality of OB / lost balls / bunkers etc if you are going to play in club events or even casual roll ups. Fair enough if you aren't, but it seems...
