Re: Should I go back to Game Improver Irons?

I moved from Ping G's to Mizzy JPX900's. I had a recent period where I just completely lost my ability to hit the Mizzy's. So I went for a flightscope session to see what was happening.

Probably the best £50 I have ever spent on Instruction/coaching. Ultimately, it is clear that you need a better quality/repeatable swing to make the most of the GI irons.

Making a fairly minor change to my swing has restored the better strike. It was clear from my session that any kind of in/out swing with the GI Irons was going to cause average or poor contacts. Moving to a more down the line swing path helped massively.

Re: Should I go back to Game Improver Irons?

The OP has said he is hitting all sorts of poor types of shot and no club will make a difference to poor technique. I had a set of G25 irons I was fitted for and while I found them easy to hit I could still make big scores and I really found the chunkiness of the short irons off putting for the short game so went to the I25's which were marginally smaller and thinner heads. I think aesthetics are quite important and will inspire confidence and it's one area GI clubs tend to lack in. I think the OP just needs get the swing mechanics sorted and will find that he can hit both the GI and "better player" clubs well and can decide what works best around his own course

I'm in the same vein, if I put a bad swing on the shot it would not matter what club was in my hand as most of mine are either pushes or pulls which still come out of the middle of the bat.

I'm in exactly the same boat playing CF16's and am considering upsizing to something more forgiving.

I need a guinea pig to take the plunge and feedback the results and you sound like the very person I've been looking for.

I happened to go down my local AGD today to hit some balls on the range and to see if they could let me have a play with a couple of demo clubs ...AP1, AP3 and Rogue.... as it happens they had an AG fitting day and there was a spare slot that I was invited to fill.

After a good warm up in which I was hitting the ball well we started having a look at some potential options.... the very first thing we did was to try a CF16 with a slightly lighter softer shaft.... the Speedstep 80 in reg flex (currently got XP95 S300's in my CF16's). The difference was subtle but definitely there....I didn't feel like I was having to force the shot quite as much, strike was better, ball speed increased by a small handful of mph and there was a small increase in carry..... just felt just a little bit easier to hit.

Next up was an AP3 with a True Temper AMT shaft...I actually didn't like the feel of these and there was little improvement in figures or in visual flight (was hitting out into an open range) . Then tried an AP1 with the same AMT shaft and found these much better than the AP3's, hit them far batter and the feel was much more pleasing.... the AG fitter was convinced these were better than the CF16's pointing to several stats and distribution figures on the screen of his PC by way of evidence... however what he was showing me did not match with what I saw visually and my personal opinion was that, although they were better than the AP3's I still didn't feel that the AMT shaft was quite right.

I also hit a Rogue Pro and again didn't like the feel of them and they didn't offer anything in terms of tangible improvements over the CF16's with either the XP95 or Speedstep shaft. I then went back to alternating 4 or five shots between the AP1's and the CF16's with Speedstep shaft.... the AP1's were good... but they weren't good enough to convince me that dropping £600 on a set of irons compared to a couple of hundred to restart what I've got, was a good idea.

To be fair, today was a day when I pretty much nailed my existing irons so it was perhaps expecting a bit much to see any significant difference in any other alternative clubs.

Still.... food for thought and I might see if I can pick up a set of Speedsteps and restart my irons myself.

Re: Should I go back to Game Improver Irons?

    Stupid, stupid game.

Played 9 holes Friday evening, and despite not feeling that I played well, managed to go round in handicap for the 9. A few really good shots in there, and I noticed that on the good shots, I felt comfortable on the balls, and more importantly, my hands felt comfortable. Went into the pro shop for a chat with my pro about it. He suggested a lesson wasn't needed, it was more of the same for me. He checked my grip and recommended a slight tweak. Went back out and played the same 9 again 2 over gross. Played 9 again on Saturday, was 2 under gross after 4 holes, and but for a triple bogey on the fifth, would have played 1 over for the nine. Played 18 yesterday in 2 under handicap, a couple of pulls left, but with teh focus on the hands once again, a more consistent strike and a lot better feeling out there. All in all, 12 under handicap for 45 holes, guess I'm sticking withe the clubs for now, at least until the next bad round

The cf16s are low spinning bombers but hit out of the toe they go nowhere, much like most irons hit out the toe.

I have the apex pros and a 4 iron in the cup face, wouldn't change the pros for a full set of cup faces though.
