If it is found it must be played as it lies or declared "unplayable" once the original ball has been found then play with provisional is finished.
You can ask your playing companions to not look for it - but they can do so if they wish. You are chancing it asking an opponent in a match to not look for it - because if you do so there is a very strong likelihood that he'll go and search diligently.

...well from 10.0 to 9.4 this year would be nice.

And last medal of the year (Oct) saw me play to handicap but CSS was +1 so that was me down 0.2 from 8.3 to 8.1

No As others have said - under the Rules there is no such thing as declaring your ball lost! You can ignore it - but your companions can look for it and if they find it it doesn't matter that you might have said - it's lost. Because as a matter of fact it is not. It only becomes 'dead' when it is not found and you play a provisional from past the position it was lying or put another ball into play.

    Any sign of the OP?
Or is it one of those "lights touch paper and stands well back"?
    (Good one if so )

Well, his question was answered in post #2, so perhaps he hasn't been back since.

You can declare a ball unplayable without seeing it BUT you then have no choice about your relief. You must then play again under S&D.
You cannot drop a ball within 2cl nor on the flagline as you have no reference point.

Important principle: the rules of golf consider pace of play a problem only if a delay is "undue." R. 6-7. A delay required when S&D (or any action allowed under the rules) is taken is not undue.

    Just on this. What if..

Say you know that your ball is in a gorse bush but you cannot see it to play it and so you declare it unplayable. Clearly also you cannot take two club lengths from your ball position as you cannot see your ball and therefore do not know where it is exactly - so you have to go for S&D. But before your 5 minutes search time is up, and before you put a new ball into play under S&D, your ball is found?

I am assuming the FACT that you declared it unplayable, and when you did the only course of action is S&D, is then superseded by the FACT that the ball is found and a two club length drop or drop back in line both become options.
