I do think in the main people should use whatever makes them happy, but a chipper really is a ridiculous piece of kit. You can achieve the exact same effect with an 8 iron pretty much. Such a waste of a space in the bag.

Edit: not withstanding those who are disabled and find them easier as stevek mentioned of course.

The lowest handicap in your group getting the P taken out of him for using a chipper?

Is he the best around the greens out of you all?

Well, no, he was pretty poor at chipping otherwise he wouldn't have got the chipper. Basically his big strength is iron striking, but for some reason he couldn't adjust his strike when chipping, so he would still hit the same downward strike and either duff them or send it off the back of the green. So he bought the chipper so he can just do it more like a putting stroke - I asked him why he couldn't just do that with his 8 iron but he can't get his head round it.

Not really, lol. It has given him some better results but he still whacks it too far with it sometimes, or fluffs it because he's trying to use it out of the rough and it's not worked.

If he is the lowest then I can be pretty certain he isn't the only one bleeding shots around the green. Its the easiest place to improve your score.

Not all chippers are created equal. Some will do no better than the iron it its trying to replicate. That one I posted looks really well thought out.

    Re: Fashionable clubs ?

I carry a 60 degree wedge but I only use it from bunkers or if I need to play a shot over a bunker or something with little green to work with.

When chipping I am always thinking about having the first bounce landing on the green as close as possible to where I am playing from, and letting it run out. So if i am near the edge of the green and the pin is a way on the green, i will use a 7 iron and use a putting grip, and follow this methodology up to 54 degree if I have little green to work with, as mentioned very rarely will I chip with a 60 unless a need to hit over trouble.

Players that automatically take a particular club are making things harder for themselves I believe. Different shots call for different clubs and that's why we are allowed 14 of them!
