    I had serious back surgery back in the early 90's where I even needed to learn to walk again so I feel your pain. A lot of LP says makes good scenes with Pilates coming out top.

    I now go monthly to a Chiropractor, but that is down to what suits you as an individual but would be careful with mixing Chiro/Physio/Sports massage as they might conflict against each other.

    I still have bad spasms which can literally put me in bed for a week but the main advise I ever received was don't stop doing what you want to do when you can and try and stay mobile.

    I play golf several times a week when I can and get off skiing a couple of times a year.

    When it hurts give it rest, when it doesn't crack on.

    Swear by a tens machine and keep your wallet out of your back pocket.

    I had bad back problems some years ago apparently! Spent a fortune on an osteopath and then I insisted on a MRI scan and it was my hips!!

    I'd suggest a proper check Tony and physiotherapy if it is your back - whatever it is Tony I wish you a speedy recovery
    removed list of clubs as they change too frequently !

    I have a dodgy lower back that had symptoms similar to yours.

    Scans etc revealed lower discs were very thin and lacking in springiness. This causes all the geometry of surrounding bits and bobs to be thrown out,making the whole area unstable.

    Consultant recommended pilates. He also said to stay as active as possible. Tight hamstrings are a significant contributor.

    He specifically stated to avoid weight lifting or rowing. Luckily, neither had ever featured on my to-do list.

    Like Phil says, it's all about management. Do things that your back likes and avoid things it doesn't. Touch wood, I think I understand it better now and have far fewer relapses.

    having had a discectomy 12 years ago, and a relapse 3 years ago, I can totally empathise with you Tony.

    Get it checked out, properly and follow the advice, as LP says get your core sorted, My core is rock solid under the flab and hernia lump

    One day you have to accept that you aint no spring chicken no more, and you have to adjust stuff, hopefully its a blip and you will be sorted soon.

    and stop going to that gym. bloody dangerous places, should be banned

    Thx guys much appreciated.

    Some great advice as always from fellow sufferers always the best advice i feel.

    Good news Phil the new mattress came today.

    Chiropractor suggested Yoga so will be joining a class.

    Good advice for swimming as well.

    My core is actually very good under my belly fat,however back to the plank now instead of sit-ups.

    Do enjoy a ten minute row though,hopefully the advice will help the recovery.

    Good advice, I have lower back issues as does my sister in law, often results in discussions on best back management, abandoning breaststroke swimming is one she swears by but she continues to swim freestyle plenty. I get 3 or 4 back twinges a year but manage it fairly well. No rhyme or reason to my occurences, lying in bed can be the worst time for me, pushing a hoover, sitting at desk or sitting driving.
    Moving around is good, plenty walking.
    Once you've had back trouble I dont think it ever goes away fully but you become 'back aware' and learn what not to do with it.

    I feel your pain, quite literally!. I've been doing a lot of planking excersises and it seems to be helping, and a lot of hamstring stretching. Where I'm sat down all day my hamstrings tend to get very tight. I'm far from pain free but it seems to be improving
