    One rule...

You get caught doing 116mph and you keep your licence...

Had he not been involved in such a high profile tragedy I doubt he'd have got off so lightly...one rule indeed.

Just read some of his defence.

How is can they blame the tragedy he has seen as a reason for trauma (which it could be) and then say the public would be those to miss out on what he provides.

He’s either useful and of sound mind therefor guilty, or he’s disturbed and shouldn’t be working.

one thing that normally happens to police or soldiers etc is that they are more trained in advanced driving than we are so can actually handle the speed (in the eyes of the law) so get a lower sentence

Meh. Can't get upset about this. Plenty of people are caught doing over 100mph and don't get an outright ban if they don't have previous bad form and can show the ban would affect their work.

The magistrates who heard the full case concluded a ban would cause exceptional hardship. That's enough for me, personally.

I got banned, my boss stood in magistrates court and said, if you ban him, he will have to be let go. They banned me for 12 months.

The fact they apply this so arbitrarily is what is so wrong...

And, in this case, the guy already had six points on his licence and under 'totting up' guidelines should've 'lost' his licence for three months...

    Re: One rule...

If he'd have been doing 90, ok it's speeding and it's not clever but it's not horrific.
At 116 his Speedo would most likely have been showing over 120.
That's getting on towards twice the limit and there's no excuse for that.
I don't care who he is, what he's done, what hardship he has/will endure - he should have got the points and the ban.
While not absolutely accurate, a well maintained car, in good driving conditions, would need in excess of 250 yards to stop at that speed
A car pulling out to overtake another would not see him, he'd be too far back to be able to judge the approach speed.
Anything over 100 is dangerous and deserves an instant ban.
And if it's going to cause loss of job or other hardship then maybe they should think about that before they put the hammer down...
