    Extra length = extra length

I struggle to reach some of our par fours in two & it annoys me. I also hit it quite straight off the tee so I thought I'd see what effect a longer driver would have. I've got an old RBZ driver which I use at the range & I extended the shaft to a full 46". I'd already booked a GC2 session so I took the driver along. With my M1 my swingspeed didn't exceed 88mph. As soon as I switched to the RBZ I was getting 92mph virtually every time.

I took the club to the range, after having to re glue the extension in (you're not supposed to extend a graphite shaft by more than 1", mine was nearly 3"!) The ball was travelling a good 15 to 20 yards farther with a lovely soaring flight. I managed to find the middle with most strikes & hit it really straight.

The shaft in the RBZ is a Matrix HD 6 "Made for" Taylormade, a nice low launching, low spinning shaft. I have just bought an authentic HD 6 off EBay & had it cut to 46" to fit the M1. The M1 produces significantly less spin than the RBZ & is better with off centre hits so I can't wait to see the results.

Re: Extra length = extra length

When I bought my driver, second-hand, I didn't realise it was an inch shorter than standard until I got it home and stood it next to my previous one. It's been the best driver I've had by far though, I find more fairways than I did with the older ones. I don't worry about loss of length, but that's probably because at my level it's more key to hit a good strike which gives you the better distance anyway.

I'm short sighted, I might not be able to see the ball.

MiB, if you can control that shaft length then more power to you. I have to go the other way as I simply lose control.

Longer drives, a never fail putter. You are going to be the man this year

My friend & guru the King of Swing, who you've met, says I've got a Cat. 1 long game & Cat 3 short game. I try to compensate by getting so close to the green that I can't miss with the next one. I doesn't always work.

Re: Extra length = extra length

If you can hit it consistently from the centre of the club face then a longer shaft is the obvious next step.

I've come to accept that I struggle once the shaft goes much beyond 43" - wish I had learnt that earlier!

Not me (previously - I only know that I'm making excellent contact with a shortened one in my M2 at the moment but its impossible to quantify the impact on distance, especially relative to a 3 wood - in current conditions)...is this addressed to MiB?
