Cool Article About My Club In Tonight's Evening Standard

So my club, Haste Hill, is in the Evening Standard tonight. Our course is council-owned, and after recent refurbishment, they have neglected to put the winner's boards back up - they say it is preventing couples from booking the clubhouse as a wedding venue! Our long-time members are understandably up in arms about this.

Article is on the website as well:
    https://www.standard.co.uk/news/lond...-a3736456.html

I think this quote is a bit rich at best, at worst outrageous: "Haste Hill Golf Club is a separately organised group that uses the course but does not contribute financially to the building or its upkeep, and their 26 wooden boards were dissuading people from hiring the venue."

We 'don't contribute financially' but I wonder how well the clubhouse would do if all the members suddenly stopped getting breakfast, lunch and post-round drinks in there?

I don't even know what a "digital board" is??

Well I won't have much say in what's happening here. I don't know course of action they can really take either, short of boycotting the clubhouse. Was just wondering what other people's views on it were? I think if you book a golf clubhouse for your wedding, you would expect to see winner's boards and trophies dotted around the place anyway.

Agree completely with the above - sounds a bit random. Did one of your members beat someone on the council board 9 and 8 and have peed them off!

My club has no problems whatsoever hiring the lounge and dining room out for functions, and there are honours boards all over the place.

I wonder what the council's hidden agenda is? Perhaps it's the opening gambit in trying to persuade the club to pay something towards the clubhouse upkeep? "Pay a bit towards maintenance and you can have your boards back".

Well some of you members clearly are having a say, and the council is having to defend it's actions in the press, which they won't like.

As they hold all the cards in terms of course access experience suggests such high profile situations are never a good thing. You might get the boards back now but who knows what's around the corner.

I'm not making any judgement on the presence, or otherwise, of the boards (although as I think my name is on 4 or 5 at my local council clubhouse I do appreciate the situation!)

Yeah, I think they're a bit clueless. If people are not booking it as a wedding venue, first and foremost it would be because:
    1. the clubhouse is quite small and not exactly grand-looking.
    2. the club is tucked away at the end of a no-through road, so no passing trade and not that well advertised - you wouldn't necessarily know it was there.

The presence of winner's boards doesn't come into it.

You're probably right there. Some bright spark trying to ween a bit of money out of us, to help pay for the redecoration they just did no doubt. I hope a compromise can be reached without any extra cost being passed into our members! Maybe we'll be allowed to have the main boards in the bar area but not in the big function room. That would make sense to me.

We hire out for wedding and other events and still have boards around. We have changed to a more modern looking perspex and black print design but I don't think the old style of gold letters on wooden boards made a difference to anyone booking
