    Re: 54 handicap !

Golf should be regarded the same as driving. Once you display a modicum of talent you should be able to gain a handicap of 28 or better. 54 is simply too high. By all means play social golf but competitive shouldn't be any worse than 28.
The comment earlier that we should a remember the majority are high handicappers, slightly condescending there and I know that most of our interclub competitions in NI are for mid to low handicappers, no club would survive without the lower players neither.

I think you will find most clubs would manage without the low handicappers but not the higher ones or the social ones that don't even bother maintaining a handicap but are members.

Perhaps some may think that but I think it'd be more of a society than club if noone could actually play the game well.

At the risk of upsetting a Global Moderator - would I do that? - I find your elitist attitude repugnant.

Golf club membership implies a welcoming attitude to all who seek to be members - yours stinks and inevitably golf sinks..

    18. Why do you ask?

    What's yours? Is it relevant?

If you are thirsty for any more information:

I'm 79, widowed, have been a Club Secretary for the last 19 years, should have been sent out to pasture but can't let go. Anything else you need to know?

    PS

I have played to 14 in recent memory so didn't get shots on par 3s.

I personally think all sports have to adapt and modernise.

Golf needs to attract more people of all ages and genders.

i donít see an issue with a 54 handicap, but I feel like others you should show some talent before being allowed to play competitively. Personally think club competitions should only allow entries of 28 and below for men and 36 for women.
Give those higher handicap people something to work towards.

I ask because in my short time on here it seems to be higher handicap players are very touchy when they think others don't want them in the game, like they get very defensive and seem easily offended if anyone makes the slightest reference to their handicap bracket....

Just my observations in my short time on here, neither care whether it's relevant or not.

    *edit*

Your subsequent edit only goes further to enhance my findings.

Again, your opinion and you are welcome to it.
My weekly four-ball ranges in handicaps from low to high, I have no problem with that and enjoy my games with them, would I play with many 54 handicappers? No. My golf time is limited to once a week and is 99% in our weekly competitions. I have a full time job, wife and 3 children to look after, I want to enjoy my 4 hours away from my family and work. If that makes me elitest, so be it. I just can't see how shooting 120+ while others are trying to play their best can be conducive to an enjoyable game.

    Re: 54 handicap !

It doesn't take that long for someone to get to a level where they can make some kind of score off a 28 handicap.

There really is no need for 54 handicaps.

People get into golf to have fun. Worrying about your score if you are shooting well over 28 handicap is the wrong way to go about it. Having to worry about rules and keeping up will only put people off. These players should be encouraged to play social golf where they can repeat shots if they mess up, take mulligans, stroke and distance instead of the walk of shame over and over.

I have got a number of people into golf and throwing them into a competitive environment is not the way to do it.
