Has anyone experimented using different balls for different holes? Like maybe a shorter par 3 using a ball they feel gives them more control on the green, to hold it easier.

Then on a long par 5 going to a ball that spins less

As we are not professionals, we are allowed to use different balls through out a round

Just interested as I might start experimenting with this over the winter
What ball do you use normally ? Is it a ball that you feel comfortable with ? One that you feel off the Putter or with chipping ? Have you ever felt that a ball gives you that much difference off the tee in terms of distance or is it hardly noticeable.

Most of using a different ball comes down to what we feel confident using as the performance of each ball at our level is very much minimal in regards the difference - reason being because we have such inconsistencies in regards our swing - we just don’t swing the same every time.

If you use a ball to give you better control and feel then you will need that feel and control on every hole surely ?

I use a different ball on every hole. It makes no difference. I still lose it before I finish the hole. Thankfully I'm getting good at finding other balls in the rough.

I use yellow ones down wind and white ones into the wind. I thought about the potential benefits of the new red, orange and purple ones for sidewinds but can't find any definitative evidence that they would help 🤔

Re: Using different ball for different holes. ie par 3 and par 5

The only time I have ever changed just to change spin rates was when the 9th on our short course was literally just over the river with the postage stamp green sloped back to front. Using a high spin ball I frequently nearly back spun the ball in to the river.

With modern balls or maybe it's my age but I find that I get nowhere near the spin levels of the wound balata balls or early generation multilayer balls eg Topflite Strata, Maxfli Revolution.

I have never changed to get extra distance because with modern multilayer balls there is virtually no difference off the driver compared to a hard distance ball.

Didn't read all the replies, but yes I have been doing this for some time, just in winter. I move from a premium ball to any decent 2 piece ball in winter. I use the 2 piece ball on all holes other than Par 3's. The premium ball comes out on par 3's for better control on landing. Works for me

What on earth is the difference between a 150 yŕrds approach ( probably from a preferred lie) on the fairway and a 150yd par 3 such that you would wish to use a different ballmfor the 2 shots?

    I now use these:

I line them up depending if I want to play a draw or a fade as the blue paint is heavier than the orange

Useful for counteracting the slopes when putting too

I think the OP should conduct a full scientific study over 000's of rounds recording every single shot then report back with his findings.

Maybe he could get his local university or polytechnic to sponsor the program?

Depending on the results, I may start adopting this approach

The OP may have something here and it's worth contacting one off the BIG ball manufacturers. Who knows maybe next year when we buy a sleeve of balls there will be 3 different balls in each sleeve one for the par 3's one for par 4's and the other for the par 5's

I can't see this working. What happens if you lose your par 3 ball on the first one, does that mean have to blob all the remaining par 3's?
