Of course and you’re a stupid head if you don’t use the empty carriageway 😉

It depends where and how the marking is displayed!

If it's painted on the road, then it's useless - except when not required, so pointless!

When it's on signs (overhead) then there should be signs indicating which lane is for which and a 'Get in Lane' instruction - followed quite soon after by similar lane display and a 'Get in Lane NOW' instruction - followed by a 'Stay in Lane' very soon after that!

Those that try to go up the outside lane, then (try to) push in are cheating! That's totally different to the 'merge in turn' concept, but some folk treat them as on and the same! I have no sympathy for folks who try to push in! I commend those who 'merge in turn'! I detest those that merge too early, but (try to) prevent others from applying 'merge in turn' properly!

Is it just me or are Jaguar drivers taking over from Audi and BMW drivers as gits of the road?

Always, always, always use the empty carriageway unless a self-appointed traffic control nazi is straddling both lanes!
