FYI Scotland is a Country and Catalonia is a region.
Think the Catalans would say otherwise...

    Re: Spain's Shame

Catalunya has pursued independence for almost 100 years. The last non-binding referendum was in Nov 2014, the result being 81% in favour of independence but with a turnout of only 35%. Sept 2015 saw the region's elections - a bit like the devolved parliament in Scotland. Although the pro-independence party won the majority of the seats it did not gain the majority of the votes. Understandably, the central govt trumpeted this as a "no" to independence. But Catalunya's version of Sturgeon has trumpeted it as a major show for independence.

As far as the Spanish High Court is concerned the independence voting is unconstitutional if it isn't sanctioned by the central govt, and the current President is a little, er interesting when it comes to democracy.

Spain's shame; horrendous scenes in the media. Could have been handled far better/differently.

You could say Scotland is a Region of the UK... if you wanted to. Catalans would disagree with your comment as much as you'd disagree with the first comment here. Scotland had a free vote - and elected to stay part of UK.

If Spain didn't recognise the Referendum, they could just have ignored the result.

WHY did they react the way they have? Disgusting.

Surely Spain are in breach of EU Law here. I don't expect any sanctions though, but we'll see

There are also several Spanish Islands that claim to be Catalonian.

Saw it last night and it was disgusting, having seen it first hand during the miners strike. Governments including our own can be very insistent on getting there own way.
    not very pleasant at all.
oh ah, some very informative info on Catalan written on here.

Don't be surprised if the Galicians and the Basques follow their lead, although potentially even more problematic for the Basques as their reqion spand France and Spain.Spain could lose a large part of its land mass, if all 3 are successful.

The republic of Merseyside, are watching closely.

No petty point scoring. My point is that the Scots assume to be able to join the EU on a yes vote for independance, whereas the Catalans know and assume going independent of Spain would mean they are out of the EU and would have to reapply to get it.

Not sure what is worse, Spain's oppression of the referendum or the people in our country trying to stop democratically decided outcomes (Remainers/Corbynisters)
