    Re: "Hello Mr Captain"

I'd heard this a few times at my club but always thought it was a bit of a mikey take but obviously it's tradition. The lads all know each other very well so guessing its a mixture of both respect for him being the captain but also a bit of friendly banter at the title or how traditionally the captain at times should be addressed.

    Re: "Hello Mr Captain"

As usual with these things I think it all depends on how its communicated & why its done

If its customary and done freely and new members learn through witnessing others and choosing to follow, then fine
If its a stated/written requirement for members to do this then that is not a custom, its an instruction and pretty poor

    except actually it's not...

In fact I often say 'good day Mr Captain Sir!'

Because when I first joined a club as a teen I was advised that it was the right thing to do - just out of respect, friendship and gratitude - and it's stuck with me.

    to infinity and beyond...

...well from 10.0 to 9.4 this year would be nice.

And with just the October medal to go - I've got to 8.3

    Job done

You don't think 'Mr Captain Sir' is pompous? Really? Read it back, out loud. Then imagine a teenager now hearing that and picture their thoughts on how it sounds.

I've heard of it at clubs before but never at my own. We all call our captain's by their first name (or other names) and while we respect his position, we would never be that formal

Our club is the most laid back you could ever find but in the clubhouse it is (nearly) always 'Mr Captain'. The current captain, past captain, vice captain and captain for the following year are also all in their early thirties.

I think a lot of you struggle with the concept that a many of us join a golf club just to play golf...

Never heard of anything like it!! Is this for real? Don't call him that at my place. About to send him an email telling him i wont be at our next committee mtg, and I wont be going to his end of season ball. Shall I start it with 'Mr Captain...sir....' ?
