    Marking a ball before play.

We all know that it's wise to mark your golf ball before playing in order to identify it if the need arises.
I'm playing in a charity match tomorrow and have marked the ball I'll start with ..................... which got me to thinking.
Is it illegal to mark your ball with a swing thought?
It could be 'smooth' or 'low and slow' or many others, but would that be permissible?

Surely it's fine, as some come with an arrow which could be used as an alignment aid?!

dont see why not you see all sorts of logos on balls.
As far as I know you can put anything on it as long as it doesn't change its playing chareteristics.

i think you can put what you like on it.

some wags at my club started putting messages on balls for people that find them, namely the guys that go ball hunting at night. a couple of them complained

At the annual Gainsborough shindig, CaptainRon famously marked Smiffy's ball - which had been hoofed from his hole to our fairway - with the large letters "KNOB". He continued to play with it so it must have been legal.

Was that charge admitted or "not proven"?

And didn't Smiffy blame his three blobs from that point forward on how the ball fight was affected by the GREEN writing!

Edit: Apologies to OP for going off point!

Not the first time a ball has been marked that way. Some reprobates defaced my own ball that way at Camberley
