Edit: I could understand if you said putters over a certain length should be banned - because that pertains to equipment, and thus makes sense to me. Like how driver heads over a certain size are banned, sharpened grooves etc. But I don't see the logic in banning what you do with your clubs.
The problem is that you are using your body to stabilise the club. Which defeats the purpose of the game.

Does it? I thought the purpose was to get the ball in the hole using the metal sticks in the fewest shots.

you have to draw a line somewhere... what else should we allow. High COR drivers? Extra long balls?

Tiger had it right. He said the putter should be the shortest club in the bag. No need to ban anchoring, just set a max putter length.
    Some clubs
    Some baws
    Hunners of broken tees
and a Snickers that was best before Oct 2011

As I said though, that's banning equipment. Anchoring is how you use the equipment. If you just banned putters over a certain length, that would make sense to me. Make 38 inches the maximum, say.

    granted not over here.
What about among the pros? I find it hard to believe that more pros were using anchoring than weren't, but I'll stand corrected if you tell me so.

What if someone has an action with a short putter that means they rest the tops of their arms (or part of them) against the sides of their body? Surely that is anchoring as well, and should also be banned?

The trouble with that though is it would affect different people in different ways, depending on their height. A 38 inch putter could be used in a much different way by someone 5 feet tall to someone 6 and a half feet tall.
