I think it was last year that the BBC stated they had a strategy to become the most diverse company in the uk. For that to occur I'm sure at some level a conversation along the lines of "always consider a women/ethnic minority for a role". Much like Rooneys law in America.

Thats not not to say she isn't the best candidate. I watch neither Dr Who or Broadchurch so can't comment on he stkill as an actress.

Just simply stating that their (BBC) strategy would suggest some sort of intention to consider people due to reasons outside of simply the skill set.

It's been mentioned in many episodes over recent years that the Dr is neither male nor female. He is an alien, male or female is more fluid to aliens, as you would know if you watched it. This will bring new oomph to the series.

A number of those moaning on here are starting the post with, I don't watch it but......... If you don't watch it then why worry?

Bring it on, I'm looking forward to the Christmas special already 😁

Not sure they made that exact statement. But they are damned if they do.... As if people automatically assume as they are trying to be diverse and represent the whole of the UK (and not just the mythical middle England that some tabloids are so fond of) then any position where someone other than a white male gets it is somehow down to diversity/PC gone mad (copyright every angry tabloid)

Having watched Dr Who and Broadchurch then I think it is a great appointment as she is a great actor. The male who was her nearest rival was Kris Marshall who is again a fine actor. But for me the fear would be that he would just do a version of the bumbliing detective he did so well in Death in Paradise. And it would be very safe but also a bit dull. Ignoring the fact who has got a penis or a vagina, from a watchability point of view then they have made the right choice every day of week. On her acting skills and what she can bring to the role.

I began watching Dr Who with Jon Pertwee and then Tom Baker. I suffered through Sylvester McCoy. I watched it when it came back with Christopher Ecclestone and David Tennant. Now it has turned to utter utter crap. Thank you BBC for ruining what was the best longest-running sci-fi show in history. Take your political correctness and shove it.

why can't Dr Who be a woman ?

Is there not a slight chance she got the job because the was the best actor for the role available ?

Nah, He has been the baddy for ages. Runs the Daleks. If the Dr was in a chair too it would be like dodgems.

Next question is whether the next assistant will be male or female. We've not had a genuine, standalone male assistant since the reboot.

Whatever they do, DON'T HAVE A ROMANCE. The assistants should never have feelings towards the Dr, it's wrong end of. Still hate to remember the Billie Piper era😵😵
