you have now opened up a minefield of a subject.
very briefly, shafts have different flexes to suit different types of golfer, stronger/weaker, fast swing/slower swing etc. there are actually five (more common) flexes Extra Stiff, stiff, regular, ladies and senior, which very broadly are speed indicators.
It gets more complicated because not all shaft manufacturers use the same marking (S could be Stiff or Senior, which can also be A) and no two manufacturers shafts are the same for the same marking (one R could be 70 - 90 mph, another 80 - 100)
then you have to get into kick points etc. have a look at the link below, then Google on 'shaft flex kick points' - there's lots of reading
