Course unplayable - automatic .1 up ?
      #57196 - 07/09/2008 09:06

We started out Club Medal yesterday afternoon, and got round to the 5th when the heavens opened, big style. We took shelter under brolly's/cover and waited for it to pass for 10 mins, and when it did, the green we were playing to was flooded, literally. farce trying to play onto it and putt.

Guys walking off around us, the 7th was 80% under water, etc etc, so we called the Pro Shop for a decision on things, and to see if was called off for the day, and the Pro wasnt around to give us a decision, so we walked in, as it clearly wasnt going to drain away quickly.

Sat having a beer in the Club and hear that comp hasnt been cancelled, and anyone who walked off would be a NR and go up .1 automatically !

WTF ? Absolutely no way could anyone have continued to play, there were ponds on the course that arent meant to be there such was the volume of water that fell in 15/20mins !

Opinions pls ?

to be honest there correct.

The correct thing you should of done was mark your balls and awaited for a decision when came back to the club house. cause that way there cant put you down as a NR and you could of continued from where you left off.

But i can see where your coming from walking off the course etc due to being flooded.

Technically, if the committee didn't suspend play or call an end to play then that's correct. Players can't make that decision themselves.

That's one of the reasons I called off yesterday ,horizontal rain, high winds etc not conducive to good play.

Oh I know that 'technically' the rule is correct, its just a bit ridiculous to enforce it when we clearly didnt have any choice - its Club Golf after all :-/

Technically the committee were correct, they had to follow the rules. They cant decide which rules to follow and which they can turn a blind eye to depending on the weather. Was there no-one from the comps committee at the club at the time of the deluge? They could have made a decision about suspending play or ceasing play. Maybe they didn't want to get wet though! I've been there before myself and have battled on until we just couldnt play the 14th, the area around the hole was completely submerged. We walked in at that point. Previous group did the same but sought out one of the comps committee who went to see for himself and then ceased all play. Also been in situation where we have marked balls and gone into clubhouse to ask for guidance. Didn't complete that round either, but that was our decision so in effect NRd.

If it was as bad as you say committe should have cancelled it but you have to wait for that call (usually a claxon blast).
If the greens were only partially flooded you should use the casual water ruling where you can replace you ball at nearest point of relief from that water.
If round the actual hole is totally flooded then you can't play.
Sounds like the people running the comps at your club aren't doing their jobs.

Had the same last weekend. Comp was like this in the AM, play suspended, like it again 3.30PM, comp cancelled. I think it should have been suspended PM, but hey, what do I know.

Take your phone out, (on silent) and take pictures. Show to pro when you walk in, having marked your ball with tee peg. Argue it should be cancelled using photos as evidence. If not, then you have to go back out, but at least if you have photos, you have a chance of a result.
