Standard scratch and N/Rs
      #56806 - 03/09/2008 11:20

Played a medal in foul (and dangerous) conditions on Sunday. About 100 people out of 200 will have non returned. When I left the club house, say 3 people were under par, and CSS was forecast at 71 (1 under). However, only 1 N/R was showing on the screen, as most of the guys had gone home without entering their score.

Now, if half the field N/R (proving how hard the course was playing), does this effect CSS, and can it be 71?

CSS is calculated as follows:

1. Discount all scores returned by category 4 players (handicaps 21 to 28)

2. Calculate the percentage of players who competed in the competition in each of categories 1, 2 and 3

3. Calculate the percentage of scores returned by the category 1, 2 and 3 players which were two over the Standard Scratch Score of the course, or better.

4. Use the percentages from (2) and (3) to determine the Competition Scratch Score by referring to a table supplied by CONGU for the purpose.

In your specific circumstance, the CSS will probably rise when all the NRs have been properly entered.

Lots of player do not enter their N/Rs correctly they should enter all scores up to the point of where they N/R.

But that is the point, what if they don't actually put their cards in? That would lead to a low CSS, when actually it should be higher.

Taken to its extreme, if only one card completed, and the other 200 N/R'd and didn't put cards in, then CSS would pretty much be what the one card shot.

It doesn't matter now. The comp was cancelled at 17.00 due to flooding. Only 65 players returned a score, and it is being re-run in two weeks time. Oddly, it has been declared non qualifying too, so no reduction for me.

I believe what is meant to happen is that everyone who is due to play has been entered into the computer by the match and handicap secretary, then when the people don't enter their cards the computer picks those missing players up and an NR can be assigned against them.
Trouble is most clubs don't enter the names into the computer beforehand, only afterwards when the players do it themselves.
The missing players should be advised by the committee and told they must enter all scores because despite NR'ing the holes they did score on will be used to calculate an accurate CSS. A card should always be signed and returned whatever the circumstances.
