This is kind of a poll really.
For the better player out there. If you were faced with a straight mid to long iron shot to the green. How many would naturally attempt
1) A straight shot
2) A slight fade
3) A slight draw
And are there any advantages to working the ball in such a situation with regards to consistency?

As someone who can only move the ball inadvertantly I would be aiming to get it within the magic 15 foot and hope to make the putt but secure a two putt green and move on.
I'm not always convinced moving the ball is necessarily the best ploy. Agreed if the flag is tucked away it may be easier to get at it with a draw/fade but by the same token it then brings the hazards into play if the shot is over played.
I think it is great if you can move the ball at will and undoubtedly the better golfers on here may present an argument as to why it is better to do so (I understand that hitting a left to right fade will allow the ball to land softer etc) but for mere mortals like me I think I'll stick to trying to find the short grass off the tee and then see about finding the dancefloor from there and seeing whats left if I acheive that aim.

I certainly wouldn't class myself as a low handicap player, but I might class myself as pottentially a better player than the scores I get...
Now my answer is whatever suits my eye. One green it might be hit the straight(ish) shot. or on others on days when I'm hitting a gentle draw shot that's what I'll account for in where I'm lining up. Though in reality it'll be side of the green where the lest amount of trouble is & get the ball heading back into the centre..... However...,
However, as much as my coach likes me to get away from doing it I tend to score best when I've a gentle pulled fade into the green, as this shape really suite my eye far better & I tend to be clossest to the pin on these.
We've been going slightly back to basics recently & re-emphasising alighnment & posture etc at address etc, as to get a firm foundation for the swing & re-visiting this as a topic has recently helped enormasly & suddenly everything else seems to start to fall into place.Meaning I can revisit a different alignment fault when I want as one possible means of creating more draw or fade on a shot, on top of the other ways to move the ball. As once I understood what I was doing wrong to be having too many draws not suiting the eye & ending up going left & then overcompensating by the time my most recent lesson came up, it was back to those basics & its as if the penny just dropped.
But no matter how nice it is to see that softly landing fade, or the long draw into a hole, nothing can beat the feeling of seeing the ball tunneling straight down the pipe so to speak, towards the pin or centre of a green.

I find it is a case of hit the shot that is natural for you, and stop trying to manufacture something. You will be far more consistent. If you naturally fade, then fade. Trying to hit a draw will be a recipe for disaster.
For me, I would hit straight at it, as that is my game.

as for the O.P i would go straight everytime but if i can i aim left of ther pin to allow for a fade, its my natural shot shape.

Many golfers can put draw on the ball, many golfers can put fade on the ball, but not many can put straight on the ball. You have to be really good to do that, but it should be the first option.

On a mid-long iron, I'll always aim a touch left. I'm hoping to hit it straight but if not, 9/10 it'll end up a touch right.
With a fairway wood, I aim at the left bunker, everytime....
and I used to draw the ball.....?? 
To think, 6 months ago my pro asked me if I could start the ball left of target and couldn't do it!!!!
Now, with radical swing surgery, I can't start it right of target.....how's that for bonkers?.....
My course suits a left to right much more than the other.

I say play with what you are comfortable with. Personally I would hit for the green area and my natural shot would be a fade and its the shot Im more accurate with.
Fades are more likely to land softer and stick around.

I tend to hit a slight draw with irons and a fade with 3 wood don't know why.
I would aim straight but away from hazards and try and aim to leave an uphill putt. In practice if I get within 15 foot..... result

It all depends where the danger is, ie bunkers, water, steep slopes.
Aim at a quadrant, of green, away from them and bring the ball back (at least that's what I try to do!)

Aim straight and draw it in, unless it calls for a fade, which I can do with careful application, unless it comes out as a straight left result !
