Is that it then?
      #54889 - 19/08/2008 21:57

Who thinks the best of the season is over?

Let's face it, we haven't had much in the way of sumer have we?
Finished work today and the weather was fair (for a change)Got home, had my tea, then what? About 1 hour of daylight left.
Looks like the summers at an end, the nights are drawing in and we're back to evenings down the range instead.

I can honestly say I've had nowhere near my moneysworth of club subs this year.

To look on the bright side though. At least I can make an effort in improving my swing during the dark nights and manage to get on the course on a weekend as the big comps will soon be over.

what a depressing thought!

the evening round is getting tight I agree. soon it will be squeezing in a round on Friday afternoon (weather permitting) and this year the monthly Wednesday winter medals. might just get some lessons booked up.

why do you see summer as the best of the season ?

The fact that we've had a diabolical August doesn't mean September will be dreadful & I think some of my best golf last year was played in September & October. Not that you need fine weather for great golf.

Golf & the enjoyement of is a state of mind.

tbqh I don't like it too hot or too bright anyway.

Sorry to bring a downer on it Viscount.

Suppose I'm a bit fed up as I haven't swung a club in weeks and the way things are going weatherwise suppose it will be a wee while longer, especially on grass.

Like I said though, at least my swing should see some improvement with practise down at the range.

Have to agree it wasn't much of a summer. I was lucky and had some time off that coincided with the good weather we had at the end of June going into July and so was out getting a tan on the course most days. However I commented to my regular partners last week that there are some holes on my course where normally this time of year you are hitting 3 wood or iron off the tee to avoid trouble, but we are still hitting the big dog with impunity knowing it won't run.

I'm not one for going to a range in winter under lights. Wearing glasses I find it hard to see the ball in the lights once it goes much past 120 yards so end up only hitting short irons and so it sort of defeats the object as the long game never gets a workout.

Have to say with the time off I had to play midweek I've got my money's worth this year especially with the hours I've put in on the practice ground and putting green too

Yeah, I'm with you on that one mate. Early mornings or early or even late evenings in summer are great.

Though that could be said for any time of the year too. We can get traquil any time of year, not to mention christmas & winter mornings. Even playing in the fog as it burns off. Now theres the start of a great golfing day.

I can though understand you being on a bit of a downer, as just recently the weather has been less than conducive with golfing & boy has it been cool for August. Now I'll play & enjoy golf in any weather any time of year, but something about this month has meant I've not really been golfing as much as I would normally & its not just the weather for me.

I have just come to the end of a 6 month sabbatical (sold my business intersts and had a load of me(and the mrs) time. Pointed out to H.I.D. that had I been doing my 6 day a week routine would have missed out on some lovely days.My bronze complexion has not faded yet and I keep getting asked 'Where have you been ?'.Dont give up hope there was some glorious days in September and October last year and I anticipate the same this year.

I know where you are coming from Basher, it feels like we are missing out on summer and winter is looming large. It is mid August, and it is 15 degrees, windy and raining. Now I don't mind this weather later in the year, and will play in pretty much any conditions, but right now, I feel I am missing out on those balmy summer evenings, a quick 13 holes, and then a pint on the veranda. This can only be done in the summer, and is a big part of this time of year for me.

It has been yet another disastrous summer. I had a society event booked for this Sunday gone and it was cancelled due to lack of interest i.e. raining too much. The 2 of us that decided we weren't to be bowed turned up to the course to find it closed anyway. So we had 9 holes around the West course instead and it was nearer to water polo than golf.

Got home and cleaned all the gear and was hit by the depressing thought that that was indeed that and I was now into the 'clean your gear when you get in' mode of winter...in mid-August. I honestly cannot remember having to pitch a ball short of the green to allow for hard ground once this year.

And as for the state of greens with these soft conditions and people not bothering to repair pitchmarks...

5 weeks ago I could finish work at 1900hrs and get 12 holes in at a course 15 miles away from work before it went dark.

Last night I went to the range at 1930, hit 50 balls and by 2015 the light was fading out on the chipping green that I stopped practicing. Best of light is over but.... I do beleive we have a good couple of months left, I think sept and Oct tend to be a lot dryer than aug and sept these days. I played almost every week last year from oct through to dec and whislt I got soaked a few times, most of the time I was fairly dry.

Range work it will be for me all winter and 2 or 3 rounds in the week.

I do like the frosty mornings on the course in winter, the dark nights don't bother me as I play once/twice a weekend and its pre 7am tee times. I did have the thought of playing rounds after work in the summer, but tbh I am knackered after work and would rather relax and take my time playing on a weekend.

I know, clubs need to start putting up signs and I mean 1-2 foot ones reminding players to repair them.

They might take the hint then.. maybe not with some.

Have to agree with the general gloom. Yep, I've layed loads and maintained a bit of a tan, but only despite the general conditions.
Played today in Stableford and it felt like winter conditions (but without the winter rules!)Not actually raining but v. muddy underfoot and some casual water.
I'll play in all weathers, but you expect a bit of respite in the summer months just to keep you going durig the winter.
fingers crossed for a dry autumn.

Just to make you all feel bad, played this morning in glorious sunshine, course in top nick and the greens are that bit more receptive to encourage good scoring. Shot 42 on the back 9 (a new personal best) and the weather looks like it is going to hold here for the weekend.

Of course it's not over, the boys have a day out at North Berwick on Friday. Looks like it may even be a 'summers day' as opposed to some of the recent washouts.

Never mind how bad the weather is, I'd rather have been out today in the torential rain than at work, pandering to the wims of various supervisors who decided several times to change the way orders were to be picked or loaded.

This is the thing when I didn't get the overtime earlier in the season i couldn'tafford to play golf enough but now I'm now able to make up for it, no matter what the weather hapens to be doing I really have to make up for all the lost overtime & hence money.... bu***r & botheration.

Like tomorrow, (Friday) Last week there was no overtime available, then I went in today & was offered a shift, really can't afford to turn it down....

Oh to be a tour caddy... I wouldn't care then whether or not I'd be swinging a club, to be cadying for a pro, any pro would give me my golfing fix even if as a secondary condition...lol And rain certainly wouldn't bother me. Well it doesn't now, as my golf coach will tell anyone. I'm the one suiting up or wandering out in my shirt sleeves as the course is emptying of people.

I always say I don't mind wind or rain. Both I may think twice about, but I'll still be out there facing the challenge.

Really wish I wasn't doing the overtime now...hey ho.
