Just entered a 3 club + putter event at my club.So the question is which clubs ?.Im thinking 5,9,wedge putter.I might struggle on the par 5s but should be ok on the rest. What would you use on your course.

Personally I would go for a 4 hybrid, 7 iron, and my 50 degree wedge. Would use the hybrid for a reasonable tee shot.

What fun....depends on the course, and your standard. Off a mid h'cap the trick is to take a combination that suits the holes you par the most. At mine, I rarely par the long holes (457,440,412) so I can play these 3w/3w and be close enough for a safe(ish) bogey. The holes that are my best bet are the 3 or 4 310-330 yarders. So I'd carry 3w + P-wedge and add a 6 iron. Then again, I could go with 5w + 9 iron and add say, a 5 iron. Maybe you should write down your card.....pick a club that you feel has a good mix of distance and accuracy off the tee (wood, hybrid, 4 iron?) and work out mentally how much you'd have left on each hole. Forget the long holes, concentrate on the short ones and see if there is one short or mid iron that suits a good few par 3s. I might try this myself....I'll see if I can post my results!!

I seem to have more control on my 5 iron rather than the 4.I get about 180 with carry,so i can reach most of the par 4s in two with this,we only have two par 5s so i will not worry to much about those.

I did do it around my own course with the same combination, scored 32 points. this next one will be a strange track so it's a case of take what you feel comfortable with.

OK, here's some of my card. The holes I par the most are the ones when I have a short iron to the green. They are the short par 4s and the shorter par 5s.
If I ditched the driver and carried 3w/6i/PW I'd rate my chances on these holes. In fact.....most of them I play 3w PW anyway!!! I guess a 6 iron would be inbetween 3w and PW. I can just about imagine playing 2/4 par 3s with a 6 too!

The 12th might be a struggle off the whites and the 2nd rarely offers up a PW to the green, normaly take a 9i.....seem like my first proper tee shot off the day rarely goes 100%

Has to be a 3 hybrid (need something for the light rough as well as tee shots) 6 or 7 iron depending on the wind and a PW.

Homer....would 2 x 3 hybrids be useful around yours for many holes?

play this each boxing day over 12 holes and I won it last year with a level par knock of 51! I used my driver,6 iron and 9 iron plus the putter. Great great fun unless you end up in the face of a rivetted face bunker with a bloody 9 iron!

I would probably just play a 4,7,PW
3x4 irons would be plenty to get onto most long par 5's (not saying I would hit them)
I may try this next time I play the 9holer, Be interesting to say the least.

dont see the point in having a 3 or 4 iron in the bag,how many times do you fellas usually hit one of these in a normal round? If you normally hit on average say a 6/7 iron 2nd shot if you are teeing off with a 3/4 iron then it means you are hitting another 3/4 iron for 2nds unless you play a very short track. Also long irons aint easiest clubs for any standard of player to hit.For me lucky if it is once maybe twice I hit 3 or 4 iron on a normal round so Driver all day for me.

Dave,
I'd use the 3 hybrid on all the par 5's. 2 of those and a manufactured shot with the 6 or 7 will get me on those in regulation (2 x 190 yards leaves about 120-135). Won't get up to most of the longer 4's but will rely on my putter and wedge to scramble

You need to weigh up the short par 4's, leaving 150 with a long iron off the tee or driver and wedge keeping a 6 iron in reserve for the other holes. Id be using that setup, driver-6i-sw-putter. Not many people may agree but its better being within wedge distance than limbo land with only 3 clubs.
--------------------
The game is won or lost far away from witnesses - behind the lines, in the gym and on the range, long before I even make the first tee.
