As most of us will probably agree Top Flight rocks, as found in the rough on all courses are a very hard ball. One that I generally call a winter ball. Well its all changed!!! I was playing lastnight and bashed a TM red into the rough - upon looking I found a Top Flight D2 Feel, this has had plenty of advertising of late but I just ignored it, unfortunatley I have ignored it at my peril! The D2 I found was buttery soft and did not cut as bad as the TM red. I absolutley LOVED putting with this ball, so soft and went the distance I tried for.
So my message to everyone is try these, a great alternative to the AD333 etc.

Every manufacturer, even those renound for manufacturing dimple shaped pebbles, normally have at least one decent ball. Top flite have has one or two decent balls. If you ever come accross Top Flite SD balata, give them a go as they are soft. Don't think they are available any longer.
Pinnicale are renound for hard balls, but one or two are now a little softer than most people think.

No surprise that Top Flite are producing some better balls, they were bought by Callaway a while ago. I go past the head office when I pick HID up from school, they also own Odyssey + Hogan.

AG advertising these at £10 online (Out of stock) but as I pass an AG on the way home I might just call in (though I'm a bit peeved with them at the moment).
Got their sales promo throught the door, 20% of ALL Footjoys, looking for some new winter booties - result. No such thing, it doesn't apply to ALL Footjoys, they don't have a foot gauge and don't have enough in different sizes to try on. Trip up to St Ives next weekend for me - FJ do have a retail outlet don't they?
(sorry for the poaching)

Not sure that they make the D2 anymore, think they have been replaced by the 'Freak' and 'Gamer' balls that I tested for GM.
The Freak balls are worth a try for those using Warbirds at the moment, found them very similar and a bit longer, certainly a good winter ball.

I've been tempted by the Z balata balls in Tesco.... At £10 a dozen, they could be worth a punt....but I can't believe they are anything but rocks!!! The only ball that does truly rock i.m.cheapskate.o is the Wilson DX2 soft......played an absolute corker with one of these today....blasted a 281 yarder down the 12th (which is good for my snail-paced swing and) and still find it acceptably soft on/around the greens. Simply the best all-round non-premium ball I've ever used.

Nothing so far has taken me away from AD333s, I tried the Pro v1's and great around the greens but due to a slow swing speed not so great from the tee. I havent tried the DX2 soft, I think I have one lurking about in my practice bag I picked up, I will give it a blast tomorrow.

The Freak balls are worth a try for those using Warbirds at the moment, found them very similar and a bit longer, certainly a good winter ball.
When I saw the Freak balls in Direct golf(there are other golf supermarkets) I just assumed it the the D2 rebadged, much as the Maxfli Fire is now the TaylorMade Burner tp, once i'd read the blurbs on both boxes & discovered where I can get my beloved speedmantle ball, be it for another fiver.. over the odds (oh bummox)
Its an interesting debate over what someone should use in winter, there seems to be two main camps. One camp says all balls will play hard, so go for the hard ball anyhow & take advantage of the distance ball & its cheap price, the other is that you need the softest you can find to make up for the cold weather.
Part of me isn't totally sold on either idea. I know I played much more consistently when I just stuck to the Maxfli Fire ball (£15/d'oz) all the way through the year & it felt about as soft in winter as in summer... almost.
Just need to get some of that cosistency back, as scores are over the tonne again, instead of being in the mid to high eighties.
So which is the softer feelwise the Freak or the Gammer? Though tbqh the Warbird with its Callaway logo does give a bit of street cred'... or is that course credibility.
Maybe that's why my Maxfli ball is now a TaylorMade... (hmmm, rubs chin)

I have tried a top flite ball I found and also got on well with it, the one with the dimple in dimple technology I think but then again I'm not sure- either way it was the softest of the top flite balls a few months back.
I'm not worrying about balls anyway at the moment- I secured myself 24 Wilson Staff TX4 Pros for £23.99 today which is a steal when they normally retail for about £28 a dozen. Normally I wouldn't touch them as they are good but not prov1 good and only a few pounds less so I would never buy these as a rule but at this price I couldn't refuse as they are still a premium range. Also on the ball front I bought 100 A Grade lake balls (not refurbished or refinished which I think is what makes the difference between a lake ball playing as it did before or not- if it has had to be refurbished then you can tell!) so that I can use my clubs wide open practice facility and stop wasting money on range balls. The only trouble is my woods are so erratic at the moment I'll be spending more time collecting than I will playing.
