Just looked on the Golf World/ESPN website. 41.77% of respondents think the Americans are going to win the Ryder Cup.
Will they ever learn?

Sounds perverse, but they could be stronger without Tigger

Yeah maybe it'll pull them together. I thought Azinger showed a lot of humility when interviewed at Birkdale.

Which means that 58.23% think Europe will win. Are we being arrogant...or just confident?
Pretty sure they'll gel better without Tigger, personally. The overly partisan crowd will be a nightmare to contend with again.

It would be a pretty poor show if all americans thought they would loose. Bit like the Brits in the 50s.
Sooner or later, they will win, and it could be this year, it will certainly not be the walk over it has been recently.

Without Tiger, the US will be more of a team and it's a home game for them but the bookies reckon that Europe have a slight edge. Click below for odds

I think this one could go to the wire and very much depends on all our guys firing from the off. There is not going to be room for passengers.

I'm surprised it's only 40 odd %. I expect nearer 3/4.
Europe have got a strong team and i.m.h.o. there are no fragile players although one or two can blow a bit cold from time to time. I wonder if "having" to make putts (as is often the case in Matchplay, because the return/2nd putt can be irrelevant) will help poor Lee Westwood who's not having a much joy with putting of late. I'm no great player...but I make a lot of putts in matchplay.
It's a pity I won't see a single shot.....
Unless I can find a way to pay-per-view through a dvb freeview box.

With odds of 11/10, if anything they are underplaying their chances in this poll compared to what the bookies think, and to be honest, I think as others have said already, that with Tiger out they are now favourites

Whatever the percentgaes are for and against a US win, after my disastrous wagers on the Open, I for one will not be placing a bet. To me it's 50/50 bang on. We've all played 18 hole matchplay and some days you play well and lose, others you play poorly and win, especially in doubles format. The US will be under a bit more pressure as they're at home and haven't won for while, the Europeans can lose and still feel ok as they've won the last 3 matches. The US team doesn't look strong to me, their top guns have fallen down the rankings, although Rose and Donald have faltered most of the potential European team are playing well. The only new hot shot on either side is Anthony Kim - watch this lad carefully I think he's the real deal and only 21!

"Which means that 58.23% think Europe will win. Are we being arrogant...or just confident? '
Here's the poll in full:
How do you think Tiger Woods' absence will affect the U.S. team's chances of winning back the Ryder Cup? Europe's a lock to win - 10.26% It hurts the U.S. team's chances of winning - 21.49% It'll be the Wounded Tiger Syndrome: The rest of the U.S. team will suck it up and win - 41.63% The U.S. was going to lose anyway - 26.61%
I suppose it depends on your definition of learning! If you look at the record recently I am still surprised at their positivity....
Then again, maybe I prefer it when they're arrogant so I can get worked up about it!

I think the europeans need to be careful in order to prevent defeat through OUR arrogance where we walk into the Americans backyard expecting to win. I do think the Europeans will come out on top... but purely because of the talent in their side that on any given day can all be up there with the very best the Americans should not be written off.

In reality I really belive that we have the better team now. The European strength in depth is greater than ever before.
I think the Septics will win tho. They will absolutely do anything to win this, brace yourselves for another Brookline, it is going to get ugly if Europe look like coming out on top.

Last time their team whipped up the 'mob' then realised too late that it had gone way OTT and it wasn't working anyway - Payne Stewart got one big mouth ejected but too little too late.
I may be wrong but wasn't Azinger in the team that year? If so and there is another Brookline I think you'll find the Yank Team trying to sort it early.

Could be that only 10.26% of the Americans surveyed even knew Europe existed - about the same %age of Americans that have passports?
Over the last few years I have had a regular bet with a good friend in the States over the results of the Ryder Cup. Currently I am on the plus side of several bottles of a rather nice Merlot.
I am owed 2 bottles as he hasn't been over since the last win so decided to offer him double or quits. He leapt at the offer. Was I a little hasty?
