C'mon GM
|
|
Taking up on Tony N's response in the "handicap cut" thread. How's about organising a forum comp, Nth V's Sth somewhere in the Midlands, I'm sure you could pull a few strings for somewhere nice (Belfry sounds good to me ) At least then there may be some interest and I wouldn't mind paying a bit extra for somewhere special.

Awww you beat me to it, I was going to write up a post just like this one whilst watching the golf tonight and then drop mikeH and the guys a quick line. Was also thinking of inviting them upto the northwest meet!
I love the Idea of the ryder cup style tourney, and yeah It would make great pages for the mag
I am sure they would sell loads of extra copies nudge nudge wink wink.

Match play format sounds good. and Ryder cup style is inspirational But......... Lets not get too far ahead of ourselves as GM have not responded yet and not sure any individuals would want to take on organising something of this magnitude. Or would they?

Evita, If it is a small scale meet then I think a site location that is accessible by all (mid point from furthest participant each way)
If our friends fra nth 'O' border are involved then maybe further Nth and what about our colleagues on the Emerald isle?. So Valderamma it is then

I think you've lost the plot, do you think Augusta would allow 24 hairy arsed Brits onto their patch?

Dare I stick my oar in?
If it was open to all magazine readers, most of us would miss out and if it was just going to be forumers.....surely the best option would be for one of us to put it together and then ask GM for help to secure a good course and hopefully good service/terms (as the venue would benefit from a follow-on article).
If we did it, chose an "area" for possible venue, then ask GM for support and "official" backing, it would be straightforward enough.

Re: C'mon GM

ok then can someone set up a thread for interested parties with the poll thingy (i haven't a clue how to do that)
Just been on the Belfry site and society packages are available (winter) from £25 for over 12 but less than 36.
If it's going to happen I would prefer somewhere special to make it more memorable.
I would stick my neck out and say just for forum.
Another idea is that if GM does get involved then each area could "adopt" staff from GM

Yup forum only as us folk are really more involved in supporting the mag rather than occasional buyers. Fancy regional comps to pick teams?

Really good idea if it comes off this time. Certainly would love to be involved as have managed to miss any local forum meets to date (not my fault, other arrangements made by my wife and I would rather my 'tender bits'remained in situ and not in a glass jar by her bed)

Re: C'mon GM

So as a starter, how do we go about registering an interest?
if lots are? and judging by the success or lack of of some regional meets, i'm not so sure that we will get stampeded in the rush...... Would 4x teams in random lots make sense? eg team A vs Team B, team C vs team D, in morning. Winners play each other and losers play each other in a points format table . If, as i suspect that there isn't more than 24 intersted because of availabilty then should be relatively easy. I suspect that there would be lots of interest but dates will be a nightmare.

Re: C'mon GM

A 36 hole comp either over 1 or two days means everyone is in with a chance in the second round rather than writing off the bottom half (wouldnt be worth the trip if they only got one round while others got two)

Woold official H/Cs be required.
In which case it would only be open to club members.thus leaving the Nomads out?

Re: C'mon GM

I think that it would depend on the venue but as a lot on here are not members of clubs and so don't have official H/caps, then that needs to be a consideration, as personally I wouldn't want to exclude anyone interested.
Good shout Brendy as if someone is travelling a long way it would make sense

This sort of thing has been mentioned on here before. However, the logistics of organising a national get together seem to have been its downfall. The idea does get my full support tho.

Re: C'mon GM

Could always book a course for a day, throw the doors open to all GM readers and forum members GM picks the number of players possible and see who shoots the lowest score, or do this regional with top 16 going through to national comp?
What you reckon?

Re: C'mon GM

HOw about team events - pairs better ball stableford so that we can get as many as possible. Alternatively if it gets opened to everyone via GM how about having a halfway cut after round one and the top xx play for some form of cup and those that miss the cut have a second round for some form of plate.

Re: C'mon GM

As has been mentioned, this has been mentioned before and as we only had a small member of regular users, interest quickly dispearsed. However, now we have alot more regular users this could really take off. Some good ideas thrown in already and I am just about to email MikeH to see if he's interested.
I think something of this scale needs plenty of planning and would possibly be to late to happen this year. Start of next year might be an idea to give people alot of notice and get a bigger count up.
Definitly up for this and I think the regional meets will give us an idea of what to expect/prepare for.
Stay tuned people.

Re: C'mon GM

Sounds like a brilliant idea, I have just hosted our annual county council day and the planning was a nightmare. More than 1 person would be needed to coordinate it, if I can offer any assistance let me know, depending on where and when as I couldn't travel to far I'd love to take part.

Re: C'mon GM
|

Guys, this was mentioned about a year ago and there were guys up north willing to get to somewhere near Liverpool but the southerners were very cold on the idea. I am sure the old timers (birdieman, J_F, Atticus and MWJ could confirm this). It is gonna take some compromise as it would have to be accessable to ALL forum users.

Re: C'mon GM

Ok I have dropped MikeH a quick email asking him to drop in and check this thread out.
A neutral location is a must in my eyes and it would have to be somewhere special to make it worth the visit.
Also like the idea of somethin for the WAGS so it will be easier for all to sort a weekend away!
|
|
|
Re: C'mon GM
|
|
Madandra has a good point there, it was suggested before and people were generally very reluctant to travel.
It has to be considered that the Scottish boys are a bloody long way away from the midlands compared to the southerners. I am 1.5 hours from Brum if I stick my boot down so this is why Liverpool was suggested last time.
I am flexible on location to be honest, not scared of a drive or even a flight if required.
I can see this being a nightmare to organise but if it can be done, I am definately up for it.
|
|
|
Re: C'mon GM
|
|
Liverpool / Manchester does seem the fairest option to be honest- its pretty central between London and Glasgow. It would be very difficult to get something going this year, and next year I will be driving anyway so could well be up for it. It would be great if GM could influence the hire of one of the better known tracks for the day (Royal Birkdale anyone? ), obviously at the expense (all be it reduced due to to inevitable magazine coverage ) of those taking part.
