doubles in downpour
      #57062 - 05/09/2008 17:45

Hi all
Yesterday sallied forth for our 3rd round (semi-final?)club doubles partnered by Mr B.
Anyone not interested in full report please skip to end for conclusions!
Rain had eased but course very wet and we had to carry (something I haven't attempted since 2006!) Even with most garbage removed, my bag weighed a ton. I warned Mr B I'd be struggling on the back nine.
Our opponents were off 13 and(bandit?)17. that gave Mr 17 3 strokes (I think) and me 7.
Not only did they hit v. straight (despite Mr 17's swing defying all laws of physics - so irritating) but also had great touch on and around the greens and we immediately went 2 down.
I pulled one back and Mr B got a par 3, but we were still 2 down after 6. With no help at all (even he would agree) from my usually steady partner, I halved 7 and 8 but we lost 9th so we were 3 down and looking for a v. early finish esp as said partner couldn't hit a thing!
then down came the rain, and in my bag re-packing I had left out waterproof trousers I was soaked in minutes and freezing, but hey, I parred the 10th for a win
Mr B the 11th
And I won the difficult 12th
Mr B had great par on 13
All Square
Sadly , as threatened, I caved in a bit at the end (and Mr B didn't improve much!)and so we lost, but I was actually dead pleased that I more or less kept us alive for 10 holes and that we pulled back to AS.

Two morals -
1)I really enjoyed match play (which I play only rarely). It seems easier to focus on one hole at a time and is more competitive (adversarial?)in a fun way (despite the pressure!)
2) Those wet gloves (Mac wets, I think, by Glen Muir)I had for Christmas were a godsend. I was frozen stiff and soaked to the skin but I could grip the club nae bother. The other lot were clearly much more upset by the rain than us and the holes we won were those where it rained the most!

Ah well, defeat with honour, I think. Roll on next year!

Its always tricky in the rain. I make sure I have a full set of waterproofs, cap (I wear glasses) and I have a footjoy wet weather glover (the wetter it gets the better it grips) and normally take a couple of spare small hand twoels which fit inside my waterproof trouser pocket and I use wipe my gloves before taking my grip.

And I carry!

Well done Ali, tell Mr B he owes you bigtime.

as to rain, big irritant is the stupid bag cover which you have to completely unzip to remove almost any club, making it pointless (anyone tried the rainwedge?)

If rain is virtually assured I'd sooner wear the waterproof trousers than carry them but then mine aren't the featherweight Goretex variety. If I have to carry then it's going to be a pencil bag and cut down on clubs - not a fan of carrying.
Agree the Footjoy rainglove.

Good account, Mrs B. I, too, have got MacWets - very difficult to fault when it's persisting down.

Did you play full handicaps or 3/4?

Handicaps were 3/4. (I am 23).
I see I got a bit carried away in my report - we only halved the 11th, but Mr B's long putt felt like a win at the time!
